HCMC – The Construction Ministry has proposed adding two new airports, Mang Den in Quang Ngai Province and Van Phong in Khanh Hoa Province, to the national aviation network development plan, while upgrading Quang Tri Airport from category 4C to 4E.

The ministry has sent the prime minister for review and approval an outline for revising the national airport system master plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, according to the Government news portal.

The revision aims to study the addition of new airports, Mang Den and Van Phong, to the national aviation network, while upgrading Quang Tri Airport from category 4C to 4E.

The revised plan will assess the necessity of the adjustment and define its viewpoints and objectives.

It will also analyze natural and socio-economic conditions in the proposed areas and surrounding regions that could influence the development of new airports. In addition, technical factors will be studied to determine suitable locations for the airports.

Mang Den Airport in Quang Ngai is proposed as a category-4C facility, with an estimated investment of about VND4.9 trillion and a planned area of around 350 hectares.

Van Phong Airport in Khanh Hoa is planned as a category-4E airport, with an estimated investment of about VND9.2 trillion and a site area of 497.1 hectares.

The upgrade of Quang Tri Airport from category 4C to 4E is driven by the province’s strategic location along the East-West Economic Corridor and the Quang Tri-Salavan (Laos)-Ubon Ratchathani (Thailand) corridor, as well as new development needs following its merger with the former Quang Binh Province.

With these changes, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has proposed revising total investment needs for airport system development through 2030 to about VND499.6 trillion, to be mobilized from the state budget, private capital and other legal sources.
