HCMC – Typhoon Yagi has brought considerable economic losses to the railway sector, with losses reaching an estimated VND4 billion and 18,120 passengers getting refunds.

The typhoon brought heavy rain and strong winds that severely impacted railway infrastructure along the North-South rail line and those in northern Vietnam, halting the transportation of goods and passengers between September 7 and 12.

The Yen Vien-Lao Cai line was hardest hit.

Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR) cancelled 41 passenger train services due to the powerful storm. The most affected routes were Hanoi-Lao Cai (18 services), Hanoi-Haiphong (16 services), Hanoi-Vinh (four services), Hanoi-Danang (two services), and Hanoi-HCMC (one service).

On September 15, VNR announced the reopening of the Yen Vien-Lao Cai line. Nearly 700 tons of goods was now being transported from the south to the north by train to support flood victims.

The reopening of this line allows trains from Giap Bat station to resume services to stations along the Yen Vien-Lao Cai route, ensuring the timely delivery of aid to northern communities affected by the typhoon and subsequent flooding and landslides.
