HCMC – Vietnam and Peru have announced a commitment to deepen economic and trade relations, following Vietnamese President Luong Cuong’s official visit to Peru on November 13, where he met with Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra.
The two leaders expressed a shared goal of elevating their bilateral relationship, with plans to begin formal discussions on an upgrade soon, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
To support this goal, they prioritized the establishment of a Vietnamese embassy in Lima – the capital of Peru – and agreed to increase high-level exchanges, including visits and joint participation at international conferences and multilateral forums.
Vietnam and Peru’s joint statement highlighted substantial trade potential between the two countries. In 2023, Vietnam became Peru’s largest trading partner in Southeast Asia and its fifth-largest in Asia, while Peru became Vietnam’s sixth-largest trading partner and top investment destination in Latin America.
Vietnam and Peru, which are members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), pledged to leverage this partnership to strengthen economic ties. They also plan to expand market access for agricultural products to diversify trade and enhance food security.
Peru welcomed further Vietnamese investment, particularly in a planned multimodal logistics, industrial, and technology hub on Peru’s central coast, with a focus on public-private partnerships.
The two countries emphasized the importance of the South-South Cooperation and Triangular Cooperation, with plans to collaborate across sectors such as trade, investment, mining, oil and gas, tourism, agriculture, renewable energy, science, technology, and climate change response.
Vietnam and Peru committed to advancing comprehensive cooperation in telecommunications, information technology, and digital transformation. They aimed to facilitate Vietnamese companies’ involvement in projects related to digital infrastructure, smart cities, cybersecurity, digital health, education, and finance.
The leaders also shared a vision on addressing global challenges, including poverty, climate change, renewable energy, and food security, and affirmed their dedication to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and commitments from UN Climate Change Conferences.
Both countries will collaborate on initiatives within international organizations and multilateral forums such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization (WTO), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).
In a separate meeting on the same day, President Cuong met with the Peruvian Congress President Eduardo Sanjuana, who encouraged more Vietnamese investment in Peru.
