Vietnam records over 46,800 new Covid-19 cases

HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, February 21, announced 46,880 fresh Covid-19 cases, with 46,861 being locally infected, down 331 cases day-on-day.

The new infections were reported in all 63 provinces and cities across the country, but the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai. The source of transmission of nearly 33,000 domestic cases is unknown.

The capital city of Hanoi had the biggest case number, at 5,477 cases, followed by the northern province of Bac Ninh with 2,582 cases. Phu Tho, Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Hai Duong were among the 10 localities that saw around 1,100-1,900 cases each.

Up to now, the country’s Covid tally has exceeded 2.8 million cases. Among them, 2.29 million patients have fully recovered while 39,605 others died of the disease, including the latest 13,235 recoveries and 104 fatalities confirmed in the day.

In related news, an apartment building at No.89-91 Nguyen Du Street in HCMC’s District 1 was put under temporary lockdown on February 20 as it was linked to multiple Covid cases.

All of the four stories of the building reported Covid infections, with more than 20 cases being found to date, said a representative of the District 1 Medical Center.

The number of new cases in HCMC has spiked, while hospitalizations linked to the coronavirus also rose slightly, reported Tuoi Tre newspaper.

The HCMC Center for Disease Control said new infections being found in all districts and Thu Duc City had been anticipated as HCMC lifted Covid restrictions and reopened its economy.
