HCMC – Vietnam’s daily new Covid-19 cases totaled 3,985 this evening, October 22, with eight of them imported and 3,977 locally infected, said the Health Ministry.

The new domestic infections rose by 359 cases day-on-day. Also, the source of transmission of more than 1,700 cases remains unknown.

HCMC as usual took the lead with 1,205 new cases, falling by 50 cases against yesterday. The provinces of Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Daklak, An Giang, Soc Trang, and Tay Ninh saw a three-digit number in new cases, recording a combined 1,669 cases. The remaining cases were reported in 43 other provinces and cities nationwide.

The ministry added that more than 5,200 coronavirus patients were discharged from local hospitals the same day after they recovered from the disease, sending the country’s total recoveries to over 800,000.

Meanwhile, 56 others were pronounced dead due to the virus in the day, with HCMC reporting 33 deaths, Binh Duong and An Giang each having seven. Up to now, the country’s Covid death toll has exceeded 21,500.

The ministry today announced the Covid transmission risk levels—low, moderate, high, and extremely high—of 63 provinces and cities in the country. Among them, 26 localities are at low risk, and 37 others are at moderate risk.

In related news, the central city of Danang set up community-based Covid teams to monitor citizens returning home from virus-hit regions.

In the northern province of Quang Ninh, it has reported three new infections in the cities of Ha Long and Mong Cai after over 100 days reporting no new domestic cases. The three fresh cases are citizens returning home by motorcycle from the southern province of Binh Duong, one of the country’s major coronavirus hotspots in the latest outbreak.

In the south, many provinces such as Long An, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan have removed Covid checkpoints at their gateways to other provinces to create favorable conditions for commuters. Some southeastern localities including Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and HCMC still maintain the Covid checkpoints at their gateways but their measures to examine vehicles and commuters passing through the checkpoints have been relaxed.
