HCMC – Vietnam is gearing up for accelerated progress in smart city development, with experts emphasizing the need for a comprehensive roadmap focusing on sustainability, resilience, and efficient administration practices.
Speaking at the Vietnam-Asia Smart City Summit 2023 held recently in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Huy Dung underscored the requisite of a holistic digital transformation approach, utilizing cutting-edge technologies to address urban challenges like traffic congestion, environmental issues, and energy consumption.
Currently, 48 out of Vietnam’s 63 centrally-governed provinces and cities are implementing smart urban development projects. More than 40 localities have successfully established Intelligent Operation Centers (IOCs) at the provincial level, with an additional nearly 100 IOCs operating at the district level.
These efforts primarily target traffic management, smart healthcare, smart education, and warning applications.
Companies like Viettel, VNPT, and FPT have introduced advanced solutions to support effective data management and operation.
However, experts said smart urban development in Vietnam faces challenges like a lack of a clear legal framework and unfavorable conditions for public-private cooperation.
Notably, some local governments have neglected crucial aspects of smart urban planning, including urban information, digital technology, and data management infrastructure.
