Pho bo, also known as Vietnamese beef noodle soup, has earned its place on the list of the world’s best soups, as released by the U.S. news network CNN.

The list serves as a recommendation for culinary enthusiasts to explore during their upcoming journeys. The criteria for selection go beyond the dish’s popularity, emphasizing its delightful and distinctive flavors and health benefits.

CNN’s top-20 list article, published on January 8, describes pho bo as a dish where the broth is simmered for hours with cinnamon, star anise, and other warm spices, creating a wonderfully aromatic base for this rice noodle soup.

The list also includes other delectable dishes such as Banga soup from Nigeria, Lanzhou beef noodle soup from China, Mohinga from Myanmar, Tom Yum Goong from Thailand, Tonkotsu ramen from Japan, and many more, as reported by the VnExpress news site.

Vietnam performs first fetal cardiac surgery

Tu Du Hospital and Children’s Hospital 1 in HCMC have jointly conducted a cardiac surgery for a 32-week-old fetus, marking the first time such a procedure has been successfully done in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

A pregnant woman was transferred from Danang Hospital to Tu Du Hospital in early November 2023 with a diagnosis of a severe cardiac anomaly in the fetus. On January 3, the anomaly was found posing a life-threatening risk to the fetus.

Without immediate intervention, there would be a high likelihood of pregnancy loss. Doctors from Tu Du Hospital and Children’s Hospital 1 concurred that urgent surgery was necessary to save the unborn child’s life. This procedure involved more than 20 doctors. The fetus’s heart was as small as a lime, with each heart chamber measuring only 2-3 square centimeters, adding complexity to the surgery. Nevertheless, due to the proficiency of the medical team and the use of top-notch surgical equipment, the 40-minute surgery was a success.

“It was also the mother’s courage and trust that supported us a lot,” Trinh Nhut Thu Huong, head of the prenatal care department at Tu Du Hospital, told the Vietnam News Agency.
