HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, April 12, confirmed 22,804 new Covid infections in all 63 localities across Vietnam, falling 377 cases against the previous day.

Hanoi saw the highest number of cases, at 1,942, followed by Phu Tho with 1,384. Yen Bai, Daklak, Nghe An, Bac Giang each had 1,000-1,100 cases, while Bac Kan, Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc, and Quang Ninh reported over 900 cases each.

In the day, more than 202,100 Covid patients were declared free of the disease, while 28 others died.

Overall, the country has reported over 10.2 million infections to date, including some 8.7 million recoveries and 42,858 fatalities.

In related news, after the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it is monitoring the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of the Omicron variant, a General Department of Preventive Medicine representative told Tuoi Tre newspaper that Vietnam has yet to report these new variants.

WHO has added the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants to its list for monitoring. Earlier, WHO had monitored the BA.1 and BA.2 sub-variants, which are the dominant strains in the world.

In Vietnam, the BA.2 sub-variant accounts for up to 98% of Covid cases detected in the country recently. The Delta variant and the BA.1, BA.2.1, BA.2.2 sub-variants are responsible for the remaining cases.

According to the health official, BA.2 is the fastest transmissible sub-variant. It is some 10% more contagious than the Omicron.
