Vietnam’s rice exports surge in Jan

CAN THO – Vietnam exported over 505,000 tons of rice worth some US$246 million in January, up 45.5% in volume and 28.2% in value over the same period last year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Rice exports last month were up 3.2% in volume but down 2.8% in value month-on-month.

The Philippines remained the largest importer of Vietnamese rice with over 234,000 tons valued at over US$110 million, surging 37.8% and 20.6% year-on-year, respectively.

China, the second-largest buyer of Vietnamese rice for a long time, ranked third last month, following the Ivory Coast.

Specifically, Vietnam shipped some 56,600 and 37,000 tons of rice to the Ivory Coast and China, respectively.

In the first month of the year, Vietnamese rice was priced at US$486.5 per ton on average, down 11.8% over the same period last year.
