VND2.1 trillion sought to upgrade Con Dao airport

By Nguyen Tan

Must read

HCMC – The Ministry of Transport is proposing a VND2.1 trillion budget to fund the upgrade of Con Dao Airport on the island of the same name off Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to make it capable of handling two million passengers annually, according to a report submitted to the Government.

The proposal includes constructing a new passenger terminal, aircraft parking spaces, and comprehensive technical infrastructure. The project will be funded through a public-private partnership (PPP).

The ministry has requested the Government to instruct the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People’s Committee to develop an investment plan under the PPP model for the prime minister’s approval.

In addition to the new civil aviation area, the ministry has suggested continuing the expansion and upgrade of the existing runway using public investment funds. This will enable the airport to handle medium-sized aircraft (code C), addressing the transportation needs of residents and travelers.

The ongoing project to renovate and expand the runway and taxiway at Con Dao Airport has already received initial approval. The project, with an investment of VND1.68 trillion, is funded through the state budget for 2021-2025.

The expansion includes enlarging the existing runway to 1,830 meters by 45 meters, constructing a new parallel taxiway and connecting taxiways, and enhancing safety features such as night operation lighting systems.

The ministry has advised airlines to operate code C aircraft, including the A320ceo/neo, A319, and B737-7/8, to maximize transport efficiency and infrastructure investment returns. These improvements could also enable new domestic routes and some international routes to Southeast Asia and North Asia.
