HCMC – The first phase of the Thien Y waste-to-energy (WTE) plant, the country’s largest WTE facility, at the Nam Son landfill in the outlying district of Soc Son in Hanoi City was put into operation today, July 25.
The plant will burn around 1,000 tons of waste per day and generate 15 megawatts (MW) each day in the first phase, the local media reported.
The first phase of the facility has an incinerator and a generator, while the second and third phases will have two incinerators each, expected to be put into service this year.
The entire plant is set to burn 5,000 tons of waste per day, treating 60%-70% of the city’s total waste.
Some 7,000 tons of waste is annually discharged in the city. The city faced a waste backlog in May and June as the Nam Son landfill was overwhelmed, according to the Hanoi Department of Construction.
In late June, Urban Environment Company temporarily stopped receiving waste to fix some environment-related issues at the Xuan Son landfill in Son Tay Town, leading to the overload at the Nam Son landfill.
In 2017, the Hanoi government approved a plan to develop the waste-to-energy plant in Soc Son, with a total cost of over VND7 trillion.
