HCMC – The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho will develop two overpasses in Ninh Kieu District in an attempt to reduce traffic congestion, said a local transport official today, August 15.

The municipal government has assigned the Can Tho Department of Transport to build the overpasses at the Nguyen Van Linh-Ba Thang Hai and Mau Than-Tran Hung Dao-Ba Thang Hai intersections, according to Le Tien Dung, director of the department, reported Tuoi Tre Online.

The overpass project will cost over VND1.2 trillion financed by the city’s budget. It will be implemented in the 2021-2025 period.

The overpasses are part of a project to upgrade and expand five key T-junctions that had been approved by the municipal People’s Council earlier.

These five T-junctions, including Nguyen Van Linh-Ba Muoi Thang Tu, Nguyen Van Linh-Ba Thang Hai, Nguyen Van Linh-Nguyen Van Cu, Mau Than-Tran Hung Dao-Ba Thang Hai, Mau Than-Nguyen Van Cu-Vo Van Kiet, have regularly faced traffic jams especially during rush hours.

According to the transport official, the overpasses will be built at the Nguyen Van Linh-Ba Thang Hai and Mau Than-Tran Hung Dao-Ba Thang Hai intersections first as traffic gridlocks at these areas are more severe.

Aside from the upgrade of the five T-junctions, a beltway linking the two national highways 91 and 61C will be built in the period, so that all heavy-duty vehicles can travel on the beltway outside the center of Ninh Kieu District.
