HCMC – The People’s Committee of HCMC has announced that Le Loi Street would be the next pedestrian street in the city center and open for visitors from September 2.

Commenting on the new pedestrian street, the Transport Department of HCMC said that the overall design of Le Loi Street and the roundabout in front of Ben Thanh market should be taken into consideration.

The department believed that the traffic arrangement of Le Loi Street should be similar to that of Nguyen Hue Street, famous among locals and foreign tourists.

Accordingly, it will be a main walking street at the center, lined with traffic lanes on either side.

To avoid congestion, trucks and over-16-seat coaches will be banned and the street will be closed to make room for pedestrians only on weekends.

A representative of the Tourism Department has agreed with the construction plan of the new walking street.

As the street is being constructed near a hospital, the Department of Culture and Information of District 1 suggested that sound and light systems should be kept in moderation.

The Economy Department of District 1 said that the walking street should only be open after 19:00 and trials should be carried out on weekends with a clear mobilization of capital and profit.

At the same time, the office also introduced a plan to connect spots in the city, including Quach Thi Trang Roundabout, Nguyen Hue the walking street, Ben Thanh Market, Me Linh Park and Bach Dang Wharf.

The walking street stretches roughly 800 meters from Dong Khoi to Le Lai Street and crosses a series of streets such as Pasteur, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Nguyen Hue.

The street will expectedly be open to visitors on September 2, 2022.

Currently, HCMC has three existing pedestrian streets, Nguyen Hue, Bui Vien and Quang Trung Monument.

The construction of the Le Loi Pedestrian Street is among the 22 proposed to be carried out in the heart of the city.
