HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen have announced the establishment of a Green Strategic Partnership (GSP) between Vietnam and Denmark to promote green transition and sustainable growth.
The GSP, publicly declared during a virtual ceremony held on November 1, is expected to facilitate the joint efforts of the two countries in fostering sustainable transformation and advancing global ambitions on climate change.
Under the partnership, Vietnam and Denmark will strengthen political cooperation and expand economic ties related to green growth for mutual benefits. Its focus will be laid on the implementation of the Paris Agreement made during the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in 2015, or COP21, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The GSP is also aimed to guarantee equitable distribution of resources and opportunities throughout this endeavor, create more green jobs, and avoid exacerbating social inequality.
Nicolai Prytz, Danish ambassador to Vietnam, said Denmark can provide Vietnam with experience, knowledge, technology and green solutions. He expressed hope that the GSP between Vietnam and Denmark can serve as an inspiration and be a role model for North-South cooperation.
North-South cooperation refers to a framework that encourages collaborative efforts between developed nations, known as the North, and developing countries, or the South. This cooperation spans several domains, including economy, society, politics, culture, environment, and technology.
The GSP signing has marked a milestone in the growing relations between Vietnam and Denmark over five decades. The partnership laid a solid foundation for Vietnam to develop a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy, according to a statement by the Embassy of Denmark in Hanoi.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971, Vietnam-Denmark cooperation has grown substantially across various sectors, including energy, water management, healthcare, education, food safety, culture, and trade. In 2013, the two countries elevated bilateral relations to a comprehensive partnership.
Between 1993 and 2015, Denmark was one of the largest bilateral providers of official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam.
