HCMC – Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on Tuesday called for policies to boost electric vehicle (EV) development to help the country achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
He made this statement during a government meeting held on August 6, emphasizing that the current implementation of EV policies lacks a clear roadmap and focus.
Ha urged the Ministry of Transport to outline goals, tasks, and challenges to create a detailed plan and assign responsibilities. He also requested coordinated efforts from various ministries and local authorities to encourage businesses and the public to switch to electric and green vehicles.
The Ministry of Construction was asked to provide temporary guidelines for integrating charging stations into urban planning and transportation infrastructure and to propose supportive policies regarding land use, planning, taxes, and fees.
Ha directed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop an electricity pricing mechanism that benefits EV users. The Ministry of Science and Technology was tasked with establishing standards for the design of electric charging outlets by the end of the year.
Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan said the ministry had completed the legal framework and infrastructure system to accelerate the transition to EVs. Deputy Construction Minister Bui Xuan Dung added that new legislation is being drafted to regulate green transportation infrastructure, including guidelines and standards for urban EV infrastructure.
Vietnam currently has nearly 150,000 EV charging spots, according to Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN). However, charging stations are scarce along expressways, highlighting the need for increased investment in these areas to boost confidence among EV users for long-distance travel.
