HCMC – HCMC aims to relocate over 5,000 canalside homes by the end of 2025, according to the city’s Department of Construction.
To date, 1,149 homes have been compensated and relocated, though progress has been hampered by funding issues, said Ly Thanh Long, chief of the Department of Construction Office, during a meeting on October 24.
The city initially set a target to relocate 6,500 homes between 2021 and 2025, intending to complete the relocations by April 30, 2025 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam, as outlined in Decision 3837 by the People’s Committee of HCMC.
So far, two projects have been completed, and seven others are ongoing. Given current progress, the city is projected to achieve 78.49% of its target, relocating around 5,100 homes by the 2025 deadline. Long cited insufficient funding for canal rehabilitation, particularly for projects with unresolved compensation disputes, as a primary reason for delays.
The department has requested additional funding for three key projects not covered in the medium-term plan—the Hy Vong Canal renovation, Van Thanh Canal dredging, and Te Canal upgrade.
If approved, these projects could increase the total number of relocated homes to 6,906, surpassing the original target by 6.25%.
