HCMC – The British Embassy and Consulate General held a celebration on November 15 to mark the 76th birthday of His Majesty King Charles III in HCMC. This was the first King’s birthday celebration in Vietnam after his coronation last year.
The event showcased British culture, including food, drink, and music, while highlighting the United Kingdom (UK)’s commitment to sustainability.
British Ambassador Ian Flew underscored the strong UK-Vietnam relations, highlighting the 50-year diplomatic relations established in 1973 and the upcoming 15-year strategic partnership starting in 2010.
He emphasized the UK’s support for Vietnam’s development, particularly in healthcare innovation and HCMC’s ambition to become an international financial hub.
British Consul General Alexandra Smith expressed gratitude to the city’s government and people for their warm welcome. She noted the importance of collaboration in areas such as sustainability, education, trade, and cultural exchange.
Over 12,000 Vietnamese students are currently studying in the UK, while many more pursue UK curricula or UK-accredited courses domestically.
The UK is supporting Vietnam in building climate resilience, promoting sustainable agriculture, and protecting biodiversity.
Vo Van Hoan, vice chairman of the HCMC, praised the growing UK-Vietnam economic ties. The UK is now the 11th largest investor in HCMC, with bilateral trade reaching US$815 million in 2023.
The UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on December 15 is expected to further strengthen economic cooperation.
