HCMC — The Government has approved a plan to expand the eastern North-South Expressway to six lanes, with construction on some segments expected to begin by December this year.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has assigned the Ministry of Construction to complete a proposal and submit it to the National Assembly in June 2025, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
The expressway, a key national infrastructure project, currently has around 1,200 kilometers in operation. Several sections, built with two to four lanes, have seen rising congestion and safety issues due to increasing traffic and updated engineering standards.
The proposed expansion would cover 1,144 kilometers with an estimated investment of VND152.1 trillion. Sections from My Thuan to Can Tho and Ca Mau, totaling 149 kilometers, are excluded from this phase due to low demand, construction challenges, and material shortages.
