Vietnam to organize two-day national mourning for former President Tran Duc Luong

HCMC — A national mourning for former Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong, who passed away on May 20, 2025, at the age of 88, will be held from May 24 to 25, according to an official announcement from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly, the President, the Government, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front.

The funeral, conducted with full national honors, will take place at the National Funeral Home at 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi. Individuals and organizations are advised to pay their respects from 7 a.m. on May 24 to 7 a.m. on May 25. A memorial ceremony will be held at 7 a.m. on May 25 at the same location, followed by the burial at 3 p.m. that day at his hometown cemetery in Pho Khanh Commune, Duc Pho Town, Quang Ngai Province.

Simultaneous memorial and visitation ceremonies will also be held at the Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City and at Conference Hall T50 of the Quang Ngai Province Military Command, located at 142 Le Trung Dinh Street, Quang Ngai City.

During the two days of national mourning, all agencies, offices, and public places will fly the flag at half-mast, and no entertainment or recreational activities will be held.

The announcement highlighted his significant contributions to Vietnam’s revolutionary cause and national development, describing his passing as a profound loss to the Party, the State, the people, and his family. In recognition of his service, Tran Duc Luong was awarded the Gold Star Order, the 65-year Party Membership Badge, and numerous other prestigious honors.

Tran Duc Luong, born in 1937, in Pho Khanh Commune, Duc Pho District (now Duc Pho Town), Quang Ngai Province, died at 10:51 p.m. on May 20, 2025, at his residence in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh District. Despite intensive medical care from a team of professors and doctors, as well as devoted family support, the former president succumbed to a prolonged illness.

He joined the revolution in February 1955 and became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 19, 1959. His distinguished career included serving as a member of the Party’s Central Committee for the 5th to 9th terms, a member of the Politburo for the 8th and 9th terms, and a standing member of the Politburo during the 8th term. He held key positions, including deputy prime minister from October 1992 to August 1997 and president of Vietnam, as well as chairman of the National Defense and Security Council, during the 10th and 11th terms. He was also a National Assembly deputy for the 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th terms.
