HCMC – The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has proposed gradually shifting more than 90% of international flights from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to the Long Thanh International Airport by 2027.
Under a plan submitted to authorities, ACV said international operations would be transferred in phases, with all long haul international passenger and cargo flights moving to Long Thanh from December this year through March 27, 2027.
During this period, Long Thanh International Airport is expected to handle 19% of international passengers in the HCMC market, while Tan Son Nhat International Airport will continue serving the rest.
From the 2027 summer schedule through the end of 2030, ACV proposes moving all remaining international flights to Long Thanh International Airport, except for short-haul routes under 1,000 kilometers operated by Vietnamese airlines.
If the plan is approved, Long Thanh International Airport could handle more than 90% of international passenger traffic serving HCMC as early as 2027.
After 2030, ACV proposes transferring all scheduled international flights to Long Thanh.
Tan Son Nhat would then mainly serve domestic flights, unscheduled international services and charter operations.
ACV said it is actively preparing the conditions needed to bring Long Thanh International Airport into operation, including organizational structures, staffing, operating plans and live trial runs.
