HCMC – Southern Vietnam, including HCMC, will face widespread rain and thunderstorms through the weekend due to wind convergence, according to the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Center.

Rain began early on August 21 in many parts of HCMC and is expected to continue. Radar and satellite images show thunderclouds developing over central and suburban areas, bringing lightning and heavy showers.

Rainfall is forecast at 25-60 millimeters, with some places exceeding 70 millimeters. Authorities warned of localized flooding and strong gusts of 8-17 meters per second.

The southwest monsoon, which drives the rainy season in the region, is at a moderate level and will strengthen from August 24, the center said.

From August 21-22 and again from August 28-29, HCMC will see scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon and evening.

From August 23-27 and August 30-31, rain is expected to increase, with widespread thunderstorms and some heavy downpours. Temperatures will range from 30 to 33 degrees Celsius during the day and from 24 to 26 degrees at night.

Coastal areas near HCMC will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with risks of waterspouts and strong gusts. Southwest winds will blow at levels 4-5, rising to levels 5-6 with gusts of 7-8 from August 24-29, causing rough seas.
