Dengue vaccine demand jumps as HCMC cases rise

HCMC – Demand for dengue vaccinations has surged more than 40% as HCMC recorded 17,718 infections and four deaths in the first five months of the year, according to health authorities and a major vaccination provider.

The HCMC Center for Disease Control (HCDC) reported that dengue cases rose nearly 65% from the same period last year. Infections were recorded across all 168 wards, communes, and special administrative areas in the city.

HCDC warned that the outbreak has emerged earlier than usual and may reflect changes in dengue transmission patterns. The disease is showing signs of arriving sooner, circulating for longer periods, and recurring more frequently.

Dengue is also no longer concentrated mainly among children. More than half of the reported cases involve adolescents aged 15 and older and adults. Older adults, pregnant women, and people with underlying medical conditions face a higher risk of developing severe illness.

VNVC, a nationwide vaccination chain, reported that demand for dengue shots at its nearly 300 vaccination centers increased by more than 40% from the previous month, even though many localities have not yet entered the peak rainy season.

Bach Thi Chinh, medical director at VNVC, noted that mosquitoes carrying dengue can thrive in most living environments. Because the dengue virus has four serotypes, people can contract the disease multiple times during their lives.

She added that Aedes mosquitoes can spread through high-rise buildings via elevators, ventilation systems, and water containers, allowing them to reach different floors.

Health experts also cautioned that inadequate awareness remains a concern, with some families overlooking preventive measures, missing early warning signs, or delaying medical care.

There is currently no specific treatment for dengue fever. Early detection of warning signs and preventive measures before the outbreak season remain the most effective means of protection. Health authorities also stressed the importance of maintaining year-round prevention habits rather than responding only after outbreaks intensify.
