HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his spouse arrived in Algiers on November 18 for an official visit to Algeria, the second stop of his overseas trip.

The government jet landed at Houari Boumediene International Airport at 5:15 p.m. local time (11:15 p.m. Vietnam time). Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb welcomed his Vietnamese counterpart at the aircraft stairs and hosted an official reception at the airport.

This is the visit by a Vietnamese prime minister to Algeria in a decade, following the last trip in 2015.

After national anthems were played, the two prime ministers inspected the honor guard and greeted officials from both delegations.

Vietnam and Algeria established diplomatic relations more than 60 years ago. Despite geographical distance, the two countries share a long-standing relationship forged during their respective struggles for national independence.

Political and diplomatic ties have remained stable, with regular high-level exchanges. Algeria is one of Vietnam’s key trade partners in Africa, while bilateral cooperation in oil and gas exploration remains the most notable investment activity.

Security and defense cooperation has also been maintained. Cultural and sports exchanges are active, with hundreds of Vietnamese martial arts clubs operating across Algeria. The Vietnamese community in the country numbers around 2,000 people.

Both sides see significant untapped potential, especially in trade and investment. Areas offering room for stronger collaboration include energy, oil and gas, agriculture, mining, food processing, and manufacturing.

PM Chinh’s visit is expected to deepen bilateral cooperation and give fresh momentum to economic, trade, investment, and people-to-people ties as both nations move into a new phase of development.
