HCMC – Vietnam will limit airport check-in counters to passengers with checked baggage and those requiring special assistance starting December 1, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

All other passengers will complete ticket purchases, check-in, security screening, and boarding through biometric authentication linked to the national digital ID system VNeID or via self-service kiosks at airports.

The move follows a directive issued by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 13 calling for wider use of digital solutions connected to the national population database. The Ministry of Finance has asked Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to speed up investment in related infrastructure and equipment.

ACV and local carriers, including Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet, began guiding passengers on September 15 to register biometric data using their citizen ID cards or VNeID accounts. Registered passengers can use automated lanes at security checkpoints and boarding gates on domestic flights. The policy does not apply to passengers using other valid identification documents.

From September 15 to November 30, ACV and airlines also explored incentive programs to encourage travelers to buy tickets and use VNeID-linked biometric authentication for air travel procedures.
