HCMC – Vietnam and the U.S. have agreed to expand agricultural cooperation.

The commitment was reached during talks in Hanoi City on March 25 between Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan and U.S. Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke Lindberg, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Both sides identified agriculture as a key pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and highlighted the complementary nature of their sectors.

Vietnam leads in tropical agricultural products, seafood, and wood, while the U.S. provides key inputs such as soybeans, corn, wheat, and dairy. The complementary trade structure supports supply chains and avoids direct competition.

Lindberg described Vietnam as a strategic market drawing growing interest from U.S. firms. The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to send up to two large trade missions to Vietnam this year.

Shipments of U.S. farm goods to Vietnam surged last year, with corn up about 60%, soybeans over 40%, and cotton nearly 30%.

Vietnam is moving to roll out E10 gasoline nationwide and expand to higher ethanol blends, which is expected to increase demand for ethanol, corn, and cassava. The U.S. indicated it is ready to support cooperation linked to energy supply and biofuels.

Both sides agreed to continue technical-level engagement, address bottlenecks, and prepare for further joint initiatives.
