HCMC – Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) said coal demand in May reached its highest level since the beginning of 2026, driven by prolonged hot weather as well as heavy rains and thunderstorms that affected mining operations.
TKV reported raw coal output of 3.13 million tons in May, equivalent to 101.9% of its monthly target, bringing total output in the first five months of the year to 16.29 million tons.
Clean coal production was estimated at 3.2 million tons, while total coal consumption reached 4.92 million tons during the month.
To support national energy security, TKV supplied 4.07 million tons of coal to power plants in May, raising cumulative coal deliveries to the power sector in the first five months to 18.36 million tons.
TKV reported consolidated revenue of 16.914 trillion dong in May, bringing total revenue for January-May to 77.073 trillion dong. The group contributed VND3.227 trillion to the state budget during the month, bringing cumulative contributions to VND12.424 trillion.
Average monthly income for employees was estimated at 19.8 million dong per person, while workers in the coal production segment earned an average of 21 million dong per month.
Output of other mineral products, including alumina, copper cathodes, zinc ingots and steel billets, remained stable.
For June, TKV said it expects continued pressure from fuel price fluctuations, rising production costs and complex weather conditions. The group targets raw coal output of 3.13 million tons and coal consumption of 5.02 million tons, including 4.13 million tons supplied to power generation.
