Coconut price slump squeezes growers

HCMC – Dry coconut prices in Vinh Long Province have dropped to about VND35,000 per dozen, down more than 85% from a peak of around VND240,000 in September 2025, cutting into farmers’ incomes.

Prices have fallen by about VND25,000 per dozen since the Lunar New Year holiday, the lowest level in years. The decline has left many growers unable to cover production costs.

In Tam Ngai Commune, Tran Thi Hong Phuong harvested about 600 coconuts from a 0.2-hectare orchard. Income from the crop fell sharply.

In Song Loc Commune, Thach Vi La’s family harvested around 700 coconuts from a similar area. Two years ago, that output generated more than VND7 million per month. Current income is below VND2 million, not enough to cover fertilizer and care expenses.

Farmers attributed the drop to weak demand, cautious purchasing by businesses, and export difficulties affecting market outlets.

Vinh Long has more than 122,800 hectares of coconut plantations, accounting for about 61% of the country’s total, with over 114,000 hectares in production.

Provincial authorities are seeking to strengthen supply chain linkages, develop sustainable raw material areas, promote organic production, and expand export markets.
