Vietnam starts work on first high-speed railway

Must read

HCMC – Vietnam today, April 12, broke ground on its first high-speed railway linking Hanoi with Bac Ninh Province, Haiphong City and Quang Ninh Province.

With a total investment of more than VND147 trillion, the rail line is expected to cut travel time between Hanoi and Quang Ninh to around 23–30 minutes when it becomes into service in 2028.

The groundbreaking ceremony was jointly organized by the Quang Ninh People’s Committee and Vingroup, with the participation of Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, former Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and other senior officials.

The 120.2-kilometer railway will be built to double-track, standard-gauge (1,435 mm) specifications and fully electrified, running from Co Loa Station in Hanoi to Halong Xanh Station in Quang Ninh.

Designed for a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the line will pass through major stations including Gia Binh in Bac Ninh, Ninh Xa in Haiphong and Yen Tu in Quang Ninh.

The project will be developed by VinSpeed High-Speed Rail Investment and Development JSC, a unit of Vingroup, using advanced rolling stock and signaling systems supplied by Siemens Mobility. Of the total investment, the Government will allocate about VND10.27 trillion for land clearance across more than 551 hectares spanning four localities.

Notably, this is the second high-speed rail project undertaken by VinSpeed, following the Ben Thanh–Can Gio rail line in HCMC, which got off the ground in late 2025.
