HCMC – To avoid fragmented and overlapping investments, the HCMC Department of Planning and Architecture has proposed that the city consider expanding Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in tandem with the development of the Ben Thanh-Can Gio express metro line.

A key highlight of the proposal is to widen the road to 67.7 meters, creating sufficient space for both road traffic and metro infrastructure.

The proposal comes as the Ben Thanh-Can Gio high-speed metro project, with Vinspeed as the investor, is finalizing its route alignment and station locations. As the project was approved after existing zoning plans had been completed, adjustments to planning along the corridor are now deemed necessary.

The department has recommended that the city assign the Department of Construction to advise the municipal government and submit the investment policy for the road expansion to the People’s Council for approval, ensuring feasibility and timely implementation.

Under the proposed design, the Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro line will span about 54 kilometers, starting from September 23 Park and ending at the Can Gio depot. The double-track railway will use a standard gauge of 1,435 mm and is designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h.

The route will run along major corridors such as Ky Con, Vinh Khanh and Hoang Dieu streets before entering Nguyen Tat Thanh Street. It will then head southeast through former districts of 7 and Nha Be, crossing the Soai Rap River to reach Can Gio. Notably, the alignment will follow Rung Sac Road but pass only through the buffer zone, avoiding the core area of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve.
