HCMC – The National Assembly on April 24 approved a resolution converting the southern province of Dong Nai into the country’s seventh centrally-governed city from April 30, 2026, with 478 of 487 deputies voting in favor.

The new city will be formed from the entire natural area and population of the current Dong Nai Province, according to the resolution.

Dong Nai City will border HCMC, Lam Dong Province, Tay Ninh Province, and Cambodia.

The Government and local authorities are responsible for implementing the resolution. This covers restructuring administrative bodies, stabilizing residents’ lives, and ensuring economic, social, defense, and security activities.

Agencies and organizations currently using the name Dong Nai Province will be renamed to reflect the new city status once the resolution takes effect.

Documents and licenses issued before the effective date will remain valid until they expire or are amended by competent authorities.

Policies and special mechanisms applied to Dong Nai Province will continue in the new city until their validity ends or new decisions are issued.

The resolution takes effect on April 30, 2026.
