HCMC – Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index easily surpassed the psychological threshold of 1,900 points and reached a new record high today, May 7.
At the close of trading, the VN-Index, which tracks stocks on the Hochiminh Stock Exchange (HOSE), rose by 17.81 points, or 0.94%, day-on-day, to a record 1,909.01 points, surpassing the previous peak of 1,902.93 points recorded on January 13, 2026.
During early afternoon trading, the index briefly approached 1,925 points.
Profit-taking pressure emerged repeatedly during the session, causing the index to retreat at times. However, the pullback was short-lived thanks to strong gains in Vingroup-related stocks, helping the market remain above the key 1,900 point level.
The VN30-Index advanced 1.25%. The main contributors to the rally were VHM, which hit its daily ceiling price, and VIC, which rose 2%, both belonging to Vingroup.
Shares of Sacombank, under ticker STB, also surged to the daily limit, supporting the VN30 index. Other major gainers included LPB, up 3.64%, HDB, up 3.38%, and MSN, up 3.32%. MSN was seen benefiting from news that Masan plans an initial public offering for WinCommerce, the group’s retail unit.
Market liquidity also improved as active cash flow increased. Trading value on HOSE reached VND30.043 trillion, up 26.1% against the previous session. Of the total, put-through transactions accounted for 109.3 million shares worth VND4.136 trillion.
Despite the record high, the market still showed signs of uneven performance, commonly described as “green outside, red inside,” meaning gains were concentrated in a small number of large cap stocks. On HOSE, declining stocks outnumbered gainers by 191 to 119.
Several large cap stocks posted sharp losses, including GAS, DGC, PLX and SAB.
In the previous session, the market had also surged unexpectedly, with cash flow concentrating in large cap and securities stocks, helping the VN-Index break through the 1,890 point resistance level.
On the northern bourse, the HNX-Index edged down 0.7 point, or 0.28%, to 247.76 points, with 65 gainers and 73 decliners.
Total trading volume reached more than 62 million shares worth VND1.206 trillion. Block deal transactions accounted for nearly 17 million shares valued at VND290.2 billion.
