HCMC – Traffic congestion on Cong Hoa Street eased during peak hours on May 15, the first day HCMC introduced a reversible lane system on the road leading to Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
The pilot program applies to a 1.6-kilometer section between C12 Street and Ut Tich Street, one of the city’s main traffic bottlenecks
Movable barriers were installed early in the morning, while traffic police directed vehicles under the new traffic arrangement
At around 7 a.m., traffic from Truong Chinh Street toward the city center increased sharply. Vehicle flow, however, remained steady instead of forming long queues commonly seen during rush hour
Several commuters reported shorter travel times through the area. Nguyen Van Thanh, a ride-hailing driver operating near the airport, said the trip through Cong Hoa Street during peak hours previously took nearly 30 minutes but was reduced to just over 10 minutes on Friday morning
By around 10 a.m., prolonged congestion had largely disappeared along the route, particularly near Terminal T3 of Tan Son Nhat airport

Under the traffic plan, Cong Hoa Street continues to operate as a two-way road. Authorities are adjusting the direction of the middle lanes during specific time periods to match traffic demand

According to the HCMC Department of Construction, the city will assess the pilot after about one month and make adjustments if necessary. If effective, the model could be expanded to other congested roads in the city.

The department said the measure is intended to maximize existing road capacity instead of expanding infrastructure in the short term.

Authorities previously applied a similar flexible lane arrangement on the Hoang Hoa Tham–Cong Hoa steel overpass during peak hours and have continued operating the system.
