HCMC – Relevant agencies will verify information over National Assembly delegate Pham Phu Quoc holding a Cyprus passport, Tran Van Tuy, head of the Delegate Board of the National Assembly Standing Committee, said on August 25.
Tuy refused to comment on the information, saying, “I don’t have sufficient information and respect the immunity right of the National Assembly delegate in accordance with the law and the constitution.”
“We will ask National Assembly delegate Pham Phu Quoc to provide detailed information. The HCMC National Assembly Delegation and the HCMC Fatherland Front Committee will comment on the issue, while the National Assembly Standing Committee will consider the issue in accordance with the law,” he explained.
Leaked documents obtained by the Qatari state-owned broadcaster Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit revealed that dozens of high-level officials bought the so-called golden passports from Cyprus between late 2017 and late 2019.
According to the leak, Pham Phu Quoc is among those who bought the passports, worth a minimum investment of US$2.5 million each.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre newspaper, Quoc denied that he had bought the passport. “My wife and son have Cyprus passports. They acted as guarantee for me to obtain the Cyprus passport in mid-2018,” he said.
