HCMC – Over 10,350 traffic accidents occurred in the country between January and September, leaving 4,876 people dead and over 7,600 others injured, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.
Compared with the nine-month period of 2019, the number of traffic accidents dropped by 18.3% or 2,320, the death toll declined by 13.8%, and the number of injured people fell by 2,010 or 20.9%, VietnamPlus news site reported.
Over 5,840 road mishaps, making up a large proportion of this number, occurred over the past nine months, claiming 4,770 lives and injuring 3,106 people, down 10.6%, 13.7% and 13.4%, year-on-year, respectively.
During the January-September period, rail incidents dipped by 41.3% year-on-year at 71, while waterway traffic incidents rose by 16.3% against the same period last year, at 50, resulting in 40 deaths, up 110.5% year-on-year, and five injuries, down 28.6%.
The country saw over 1,180 traffic accidents occur in September, which killed 534 people and injured 882 others, down 5.2% in terms of the number of deaths and 14.5% in injuries, year-on-year, said Nguyen Trong Thai, chief of the National Traffic Safety Committee.
Of the total, road accidents accounted for 696 incidents, up 2% from the figure seen in September last year, and killed 526 people, down 5% year-on-year.
