HCMC – Most modern cars and motorcycles in Vietnam can operate normally with E10 bio-gasoline, according to major automakers, offering reassurance to consumers ahead of the fuel’s nationwide introduction on June 1.
The switch to E10 has raised consumer concerns about engine durability and vehicle performance. Major vehicle manufacturers have released technical guidance confirming the compatibility of their products with the biofuel.
According to Toyota Vietnam, all of its vehicles manufactured since 1997 are fully compatible with E10, with no additional maintenance requirements or impact on safety. Honda Vietnam also confirmed that most of its cars and motorcycles can operate normally on E10. One exception is the high-performance Honda Civic Type R, which is recommended to continue using high-octane fuel.
Similarly, Hyundai Thanh Cong Vietnam and Ford Vietnam said their modern gasoline-powered vehicles, including newer EcoBoost engine generations, comply with global biofuel standards. Some Ford models produced after 2013 can operate with ethanol blends of up to 15%.
In the premium segment, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam, BMW Vietnam and Audi Vietnam also confirmed broad compatibility across current vehicle lineups, except for some early-generation direct-injection gasoline models introduced in the 2000s.
From a technical perspective, industry experts advised consumers not to be overly concerned by unverified claims circulating on social media, noting that E10 has become a mainstream fuel standard in many developed markets.
However, because ethanol has stronger cleaning properties than conventional gasoline, older vehicles or those with poor maintenance histories may experience loosened deposits in fuel tanks and fuel lines, potentially causing clogged fuel filters.
To ensure a smooth transition, consumers are advised to maintain fuel systems regularly, replace aging rubber components and refuel at reputable stations to ensure fuel blending quality meets technical standards.
