From late February to the end of March, Putaleng Mountain in Lai Chau Province transforms into a breathtaking canvas of purple, pink, and orange as azaleas bloom across its slopes, creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle.
Rising 3,049 meters above sea level, Putaleng Mountain is nestled in Ta Leng Commune, Tam Duong District, and is often referred to as the “second roof” of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range. Unlike many other mountains, Putaleng remains largely untouched, preserving its lush primeval forests and dramatic landscapes.

Compared to Fansipan, Bach Moc, and other trekking routes, Putaleng is among the most challenging to conquer. The trek to the summit takes about two days and three nights, leading adventurers through dense forests, steep slopes, cascading waterfalls, and striking mountain vistas.
During this journey, trekkers will encounter vast forests of blooming azaleas, scientifically known as rhododendrons. Nguyen Trong Cung, an experienced trekker who has conquered Putaleng multiple times, shared that the azaleas begin blooming in late February and last until the end of March, depending on the weather each year. By mid-March, if conditions are ideal, the flowers reach their peak, turning the Putaleng trekking route into a vivid masterpiece of nature.

The higher the altitude, the later the flowers bloom, creating layers of color that seem to climb the mountain. The northwest region of Vietnam is home to around 30 species of azaleas, with Putaleng boasting some of the most stunning varieties, particularly those in delicate pinkish-purple hues. Some trees reach heights of seven meters, towering above the dense forest canopy and standing as striking landmarks along the trail.
The trek covers more than 30 kilometers of steep and rugged terrain, demanding endurance and determination from climbers. Yet, despite the strenuous journey, the spectacular beauty of Putaleng in full bloom makes every step worth it, offering an unforgettable experience to those who venture to its peak.
