CAN THO – Construction began on May 19 on 220-kV substations of two coastal wind power projects in Can Tho City.

With total investment capital of more than VND23.6 trillion, the substations are part of the Phu Cuong 1A and 1B wind fram complex developed by Phu Cuong Wind Power JSC and the Soc Trang 4 wind farm developed by Soc Trang Energy Investment JSC No.1.

Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh, representing the investor of the Phu Cuong projects, described the 220-kV substation as a key infrastructure component for grid connection, power transmission and operation of the wind farms.

The Phu Cuong 1A and 1B projects have a combined capacity of 200 MW and total investment of more than VND9.1 trillion. The development consists of offshore turbines, a 220-kV substation and a 25-km transmission line running through Lai Hoa, Vinh Phuoc, Vinh Chau and Khanh Hoa wards in Can Tho City.

The Soc Trang 4 wind farm has a planned capacity of 350 MW and investment capital of VND14.5 trillion. The project in Vinh Chau Ward will have 56 turbines with a capacity of 6.25 MW each, along with a 220-kV substation and a 2.7-km transmission line.

Vuong Quoc Nam, vice chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee, said the city has received approval for 56 power projects with a total capacity of 9,154 MW, including 30 wind power projects with a combined capacity of around 2,785 MW.

According to Nam, authorities have approved investment policies for 20 wind power projects totaling 1,428 MW. Nine wind farms with a combined capacity of 396 MW are already in commercial operation, while three projects with 142 MW are under construction.

Another eight projects with a total capacity of around 890 MW are completing final procedures before construction, he added.

Can Tho is also selecting investors for 10 more wind power projects with a combined capacity of 1,357 MW and expects to complete investment approvals in the second quarter, Nam said.

Local authorities expect the two projects launched on May 19 to add clean energy capacity to the national grid and support economic growth in the city.
