CAN THO – Three major transport projects worth more than VND42.36 trillion in Can Tho City are grappling with land clearance issues and shortages of construction materials, local authorities reported on April 14.
Le Thanh Viet, deputy director of the Can Tho Department of Construction, said the projects include the Chau Doc–Can Tho–Soc Trang Expressway Phase 1, the upgrade of National Highway 91 Km0–Km7 section, and the Western Beltway project in the city.
The VND31.28-trillion expressway project requires about 17.48 million cubic meters of sand. Authorities have secured 14.09 million cubic meters, leaving a shortfall of 3.39 million cubic meters. Additional supply is being sought from An Giang, Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces.
Rock supply is also insufficient, with about 2.29 million cubic meters yet to be identified out of total demand of 4.12 million cubic meters.
The National Highway 91 project is behind schedule due to later-than-expected site clearance.
For the Western Beltway project, more than half of the site has been handed over. The project is under review for a potential increase in total investment. Three construction packages have not yet been implemented due to ongoing legal and cost reviews.
Nguyen Van Hoa, vice chairman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, identified compensation and resettlement as the main bottlenecks affecting progress. The city has issued policies under its authority and identified resettlement land and pricing to support site clearance.
