Creating more spaces for water

Following its merger with Binh Duong and Ba Ria – Vung Tau, HCMC will have greater latitude to implement flood-control solutions in a cohesive, synchronized, and effective manner. The root cause of this issue must be recognized and resolved with a comprehensive and overarching planning vision. Modest proposals A series of four consecutive storms in September 2025 have had severe consequences for numerous localities, with urban flooding being one of the most serious. While not directly impacted by the storms, the heavy rainfall they brought has exacerbated HCMC’s chronic flooding issues. Recently, the Thu Duc Regional Technical Infrastructure Development Center proposed building an underground reservoir. The proposed structure, measuring 70x50x5.2 meters, would be built beneath the soccer field at the Linh Tay Sports Complex, located at 16 Tran Van Nua Street. This facility, composed of cross-way modular plastic blocks, could store a volume of water equivalent to 650 large tank trucks. The project also includes a settling basin, a pump chamber, and a network of collection and drainage sewers.
