DANANG – Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the prospect of tourism growth between Japan and Danang and other central provinces remains bright.

The Japanese Consulate General in Danang stated that it will work to promote tourism between Japan and the central provinces, with Danang as the focal point of the effort.

According to the consulate, when the Covid-19 situation improves, the resumption of direct flights from Danang to Japan will help draw Japanese tourists to the city and other central provinces.

Prior to the pandemic, Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar offered 16 weekly direct flights to Danang from Tokyo and Osaka. In turn, the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi received 4,000 to 5,000 visa applications from Danang and other central provinces.

Japan ranked fourth of the top 10 tourism markets in Danang, accounting for 5.25% of international visitors.

The number of Japanese visitors to Danang grew rapidly. Some 52,600 Japanese tourists came to the city in 2014. The figure rose to 183,572 visitors in 2019.

On August 26, the Japanese authority held the opening ceremony of the Consulate General of Japan in Danang. According to Consul General Yakabe Yoshinori, the two-year upgrade from the Consular Office to the Consulate General was the fastest and most unprecedented in Japanese history.

The establishment of the consulate is expected to actively enhance tourism development between the two countries.

Over 300 Japanese enterprises are operating in the central provinces of Vietnam. Among other countries, Japan is Danang’s largest investor.
