HCMC – Phan Dinh Kieu, the 55-year-old driver of a car involved in a deadly accident on the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway in central Vietnam, has been detained over his allegedly reckless behavior that led to the accident.

The February 18 accident left a woman and her two children dead. They were all the passengers in the seven-seater car that was trying to overtake a container truck when it hit the right front side of the truck, spun and smashed into another truck in the opposite direction.

The police announced the decision to press charges against Kieu several hours after the incident occurred on the two-lane expressway which allows for a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

Kieu’s car was transporting a family of four — Phan Dinh Quy, his wife Le Thi Hanh and their two children aged 15 and 9, to the north of the country. Kieu and Quy substained minor injuries in the accident.

The 98-kilometer Cam Lo-La Son Expressway, which connects Quang Tri and Thua-Thien Hue provinces, has seen multiple serious accidents since it was opened to traffic on December 31, 2022. In an incident in the expressway in December last year, one driver was killed, and two others were injured when two container trucks collided and caught fire.
