HCMC – Authorities in Quang Tri Province on December 12 approved the investment policy for the Quang Trach III LNG-fired power plant, a major project to be developed by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN).

Quang Trach III, part of the Quang Trach Power Center, will be built on about 74 hectares in Phu Trach Commune. The project will use combined-cycle gas turbine technology and have an installed capacity of 1,500 megawatts.

Total preliminary investment is estimated at VND41.83 trillion. EVN will contribute 20% of the capital, with the remaining 80% to be financed through domestic commercial loans.

EVN and Power Project Management Board No. 2 are accelerating the preparation of the feasibility study, which will be submitted to the Quang Tri government for appraisal as a basis for final approval.

The project is included in the revised national power development plan, known as National Power Development Plan VIII, which has been approved by the Prime Minister. Local authorities expect the plant to provide a strong boost to economic growth in Quang Tri and the north-central region, contributing an estimated VND1.2 trillion annually to the provincial budget.

The Quang Trach Power Center has a total planned capacity of around 4,500 MW, comprising the Quang Trach I thermal power plant and the LNG-based Quang Trach II and III projects. Once operational, each plant is expected to supply about 9.1 billion kWh of electricity annually to the national grid, supporting energy security and enhancing the stability of Vietnam’s power system.
