HCMC – Kon Plong District in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum experienced five consecutive earthquakes today, February 7, with the most powerful quake recorded with a magnitude of 4.0.
According to the Institute of Geophysics, five tremors struck the area for around one hour. No damage has been reported so far following the five tremors.
The first quake, which measures 3.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 10:50 a.m. with a focal depth of around 8.2 kilometers.
The second quake, with a magnitude of 3.3, occurred at 10:59 a.m. with a focal depth of around 8.1 kilometers.
The third quake is the strongest among the five earthquakes, at a magnitude of 4.0. It occurred at 11:12 a.m. with a focal depth of around 8.1 kilometers.
The fourth and fifth quakes that happened at 11:38 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. had magnitude 2.5 and 2.8, respectively.
Quakes with magnitude ranging from 2 to 2.9 and 3 to 3.9 are considered weak, posing little damage to buildings and houses of local residents.
In August 2022, a magnitude-4.7 quake occurred at Kon Plong, shaking the locality and neighboring areas in Quang Nam and Danang.
According to the Institute of Geophysics, there might be more earthquakes in Kon Plong, with magnitudes of up to 5.5 or even higher in the future.
