HCMC – Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Huy Ngo passed away at his home on September 16 at the age of 88, the local media reported.

The memorial service is scheduled for September 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral ceremony from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the National Funeral Home, 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.

Le Huy Ngo was born on August 13, 1938, in Tinh Hai Commune, Tinh Gia District, Thanh Hoa Province, now Hai Binh Ward, Thanh Hoa Province.

He was widely known as the “minister of storms and floods.” The nickname came not only from his many times wading through floodwaters to lead rescue efforts and protect people, crops, and villages, but also from the conviction that his entire life was devoted to farmers and rural communities.

He was among the pioneers who laid the foundation for what later became the New Rural Development Program, driven by his aspiration to transform the face of Vietnam’s countryside.

Former Minister Le Huy Ngo was awarded the 60-year Party Membership Badge; the Second-class Independence Order; multiple First-, Second-, and Third-class Labor and Resistance Orders; the Labor Order for Vietnam–Laos cooperation; the Golden Lion Order of Senegal; as well as commendations from the prime minister, the United Nations, and many other orders, medals, and commemorative awards.
