HCMC – French shipping and logistics giant CMA-CGM Group is planning to invest in an electric barge project in Vietnam, a senior representative of the company said at a meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on November 19.
At the meeting, Mathieu Friedberg, senior vice president of CMA-CGM, outlined the project’s objective of creating an efficient transport network that integrates sea, inland waterways, road, and rail systems to meet the rising demand for cargo transportation.
Friedberg highlighted CMA-CGM’s current operations in Vietnam, which include four shipping companies serving six international seaports with 15 international routes connecting to Europe, the U.S., and other key destinations.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha praised the potential of CMA-CGM’s initiatives, emphasizing their importance in strengthening Vietnam-France cooperation, particularly after the October 2024 upgrade of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
He urged CMA-CGM to focus on developing green and smart port solutions, integrated infrastructure investments for renewable energy supply, green fuels, digital transformation, and automation.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting clean energy projects, citing the introduction of the direct electricity purchase mechanism as a key measure to encourage investments in renewable energy, including electric barges and charging infrastructure.
