Generali Vietnam’s CSR extends the safety net

Generali Vietnam’s community program “Sinh Con, Sinh Cha” alongside the company’s comprehensive community agenda has extended the reach of Generali Group’s The Human Safety Net to millions more families, shaping a brighter future for local children.

An innovative approach with proven impacts

In recent years, organizations worldwide have been rethinking their corporate sustainability efforts to stay relevant in the rapidly changing socioeconomic landscape induced by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as geopolitical uncertainties. As a member of Generali Group, being confirmed in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index, among the top companies in the insurance sector, Generali Vietnam has also proactively innovated its corporate social responsibility (CSR) approaches with an aim to create lasting values for the local community.

One of the company’s key focuses in Vietnam is to support families with young children (under 6 years of age), thereby contributing to the country’s sustainable development, in line with the mission of Generali Group’s foundation – The Human Safety Net (THSN) – to unlock the potential of people living in vulnerable circumstances, so that they can transform the lives of their families and communities.

In extending Generali’s ‘safety net’ to sustainably benefit local families in Vietnam, Generali in partnership with the National Fund for Vietnamese Children (NFVC) has continued to expand the “Sinh Con, Sinh Cha” (SCSC – Born Children, Born Parents) community parenting education program.

With practical and useful content and innovative formats, the program has successfully reached out and benefited more than 6,000 parents, children, kindergarten teachers and staff via its local workshops organized across the country to date. A far greater number of more parents have also benefited from the program’s parenting sitcom series, online workshops, podcasts and other wide-ranging parenting content provided on SCSC’s social media platforms.

Such efforts have enabled the program to meet its goal of strengthening parenting knowledge and skills, thus contributing to Vietnamese children’s early childhood development. This is solidly reaffirmed by the results of a report of its pilot program in 2020 – 2021 done by the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Studies under the HCMC-based University of Social Sciences and Humanities, which was released earlier this year. According to this report, an average of 85% of parents agreed that the program helps improve their parenting knowledge and skills for each topic discussed. Additionally, 97% of parents have changed their parenting approaches, and 97% of parents found that the program helped them reduce parenting stress.

Continuing to extend the program’s positive reach and impacts, SCSC has recently released the 2022 season of its parenting series. Generali Vietnam also commits to contribute VND100,000 to SCSC’s operating fund for every successfully issued policy of VITA – Cho Con, its recently launched education-focused investment-linked insurance product.

A comprehensive community platform

SCSC has quickly grown beyond a parenting education program to become a comprehensive community platform, engaging and connecting Generali Vietnam’s staff and agents, customers, partners and public donors through meaningful causes aimed at touching the lives of vulnerable families with young children, helping them to secure a brighter future.

Under this platform, a wide range of volunteering, fundraising and charity giving activities have been successfully organized, benefiting thousands of children and families nationwide.

Just recently, Generali and the NFVC have successfully organized the fundraising campaign “Supporting the Children’s Schooling Steps” to raise funds for a new kindergarten branch for disadvantaged children in Daklak Province. The fully equipped classroom building, together with complementary facilities such as a sanitation area, a standard playground and a mini library, was inaugurated and handed over to the teachers, staff and children of Phu Loc kindergarten on  November 1, 2022.

On the occasion of the 2022 Lunar New Year, Generali also organized the “Tomorrow for Our Children” program, delivering 500 sets of Tet gifts and cash support to underprivileged children losing their parents to Covid-19 in Southern Vietnam.

Scaling up

In line with its vision in shifting from the traditional CSR approach to a more scalable and sustainable CSV (creating shared value) approach, Generali has managed to embed parenting knowledge from its flagship program SCSC to the training of its agency trainer force, which allows it to leverage its distribution network and resources to reach out to even more customers and parents, thereby benefiting more families and children.

Generali also seeks to forge strategic partnerships with like-minded partners to create synergy to further extend the impact and reach of its programs. In December 2021, Generali via its THSN foundation has joined hands with UNICEF, the Ministry of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs and businesses to launch the “Integrated Early Childhood Development (IECD) Holistic Parenting” Scale-up Project.

With its execution kickstarted in September this year, the national-scale project will draw on the EUR1-million financial support from Generali and The Human Safety Net, as well as SCSC’s materials and community education activities to expand to 30 districts of 15 provinces across Vietnam, and 40 participating companies. Through the digital learning platform, the project is also expected to reach about 276,000 parents with young children and contribute to ensure the nurturing care for all Vietnamese children.

Moving forward, Generali Vietnam seeks to leverage its parenting education program SCSC and to contribute more effectively to shaping a brighter future for Vietnamese families and children. This entails continuing to innovate and diversify its community offerings, while strengthening strategic partnerships to create synergy for greater societal impacts of its programs.
