Gold, dollar edge up

HCMC – Domestic gold prices rose on the morning of May 12, with SJC-branded gold bars increasing by VND1.8 million per tael from the close on May 11, while the U.S. dollar at commercial banks edged up by VND6 against the Vietnamese dong.

At 9:10 a.m., Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC), Phu Quy and DOJI quoted SJC-branded gold bars at VND164 million per tael for buying and VND167 million per tael for selling, up VND1.8 million from the close on May 11.

In the gold ring segment, Bao Tin Minh Chau listed gold rings at VND164 million-VND167 million per tael, up VND1.8 million from the previous session. Phu Quy Jewelry quoted gold rings at VND163.6 million for buying and VND166.6 million for selling, up VND1.6 million from the close on May 11.

The spread between buying and selling prices remained unchanged at VND3 million per tael.

Globally, gold traded at around US$4,734 per ounce, up about US$50 from the same time in the previous session. Converted at Vietcombank’s exchange rate, the global gold price was equivalent to around VND150.4 million per tael, leaving domestic SJC gold prices about VND16.6 million higher than global prices.

On the same morning, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) set the central exchange rate at VND25,123 per U.S. dollar, up VND5 from the close on May 11.

At commercial banks, the U.S. dollar edged up. Vietcombank quoted the greenback at VND26,099 for buying and VND26,379 for selling. VietinBank listed the dollar at VND26,124-VND26,379, while BIDV traded it at VND26,139-VND26,379. Eximbank quoted the currency at VND26,110 for buying and VND26,379 for selling. All rates were up VND6 from the close on May 11.
