HCMC – A magnitude-2.6 earthquake struck Hanoi on February 3, causing noticeable tremors in some areas.

According to the Institute of Geophysics, the quake occurred at 7:52 p.m. with its epicenter in the outlying district of Chuong My. The tremor occurred at a focal depth of eight kilometers.

Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Institute of Geophysics, said that the institute is closely monitoring the situation.

The affected area lies near the Red River-Lo River-Chay River fault system, which has a history of seismic activity. The region experienced a magnitude-8 earthquake in the 12th century, but experts note that strong earthquakes in this area occur only once every few hundred years.

Anh said it is important to further survey the fault line to better assess earthquake risks in Hanoi. He suggested installing monitoring equipment in high-rise buildings to measure the intensity of tremors and improve preparedness.
