HCMC – HCMC has broken ground on a VND1-trillion social housing project to provide 864 apartment units for households affected by the Xuyen Tam Canal improvement project.
Located at 4 Phan Chu Trinh Street, Binh Thanh Ward, the development will serve residents displaced by the dredging, environmental rehabilitation, and infrastructure works along the canal, which stretches from the Nhieu Loc–Thi Nghe Canal to the Vam Thuat River. It will also accommodate other eligible cases under current regulations.
The project covers more than 12,000 square meters and is funded entirely by the city’s budget. Each building will combine residential space with commercial and service facilities. Apartments will range from 40 to 76 square meters, offering options from one to three bedrooms.
According to the HCMC Department of Construction, the Xuyen Tam Canal project affects over 2,200 households, with around 1,130 requiring relocation. Those not eligible for land or apartment resettlement will be considered for social housing support.
Vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee Bui Xuan Cuong said the city has been assigned to deliver 199,400 social housing units between 2021 and 2030. More than 18,000 units are targeted for completion in 2021-2025, and another 181,000 in 2026-2030.
He stressed the need for transparency in planning, pricing, and beneficiary selection, ensuring consistency with construction progress. Once completed, the housing will be ready for immediate occupancy, with modern infrastructure and quality public facilities.
