HCMC – Ho Chi Minh City is scheduled to start work on four large-scale infrastructure projects on April 29 and award an investment certificate for the nearly US$5-billion Can Gio International Transshipment Port project.

The events, which coincide with the 51st anniversary of the liberation of the south and the reunification of the country on April 30, bring together key projects spanning metro transport, an international seaport, urban space and education, underscoring the city’s push to advance strategic infrastructure with strong participation from the private sector.

Among the most notable projects is the Metro Line No. 2 section that connects Ben Thanh Market and Thu Thiem New Urban Area, and requires total capital of nearly VND46.3 trillion. The 6.2-kilometer line will link the existing downtown area from Ben Thanh Station, run underground along Ham Nghi Boulevard, and cross beneath the Saigon River before reaching Thu Thiem.

The metro line, alongside plans for extension to Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province, is expected to form a future growth corridor linking Thu Thiem and Long Thanh.

In parallel, the VND128.9-trillion Can Gio International Transshipment Port project, developed by a consortium including Vinalines, Saigon Port and Swiss shipping line Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), is designed to handle up to 16.9 million TEUs by 2047, positioning the city within global logistics networks and opening up new sea-oriented development space.

In the new urban center, construction will also begin on the central square and administrative complex project, covering 33 hectares with total capital of around VND30 trillion. The project comprises four components, including underground transport infrastructure, an administrative center, a convention and performance complex, and a central square.

Across the river, the Ben Nha Rong–Khanh Hoi waterfront park project will expand the Ho Chi Minh Museum relic site to 11 hectares, combined with more than 19 hectares of green space and multi-functional public areas, contributing to the redevelopment of the riverside into an open, accessible urban space.

In the city’s northwestern gateway, the VND59-trillion International University Urban Area project in Xuan Thoi Son Commune, spanning nearly 880 hectares, will be developed as a major hub for education, research and innovation.

Strong engagement from authorities and strategic investors such as Vingroup, THACO, and Sun Group has helped remove legal bottlenecks, laying a solid foundation for HCMC to pursue double-digit economic growth in its next development phase.
